Knee ligaments and their functions 

The ligaments found in the knee of the human foot connect the bones of the foot and provide strength and stability to the knee. The knee joint is made up of the femur bone from above, the tibia bone from below, the fibula bone, the patella bone found in the front of the femur, and four types of ligaments. The knee joint is one of the strongest joints in the body, on which the weight of the entire body above the knee falls. Knee joints play an important role in human walking, standing, sitting, running, playing, and jumping. There are four types of ligaments found in the knee of the human foot, which are as follows:-

  1. An anterior cruciate ligament (A.C.L.).
  2. A posterior cruciate ligament (P.C.L.).
  3. Medial Collateral Ligament (M.C.L.).
  4. Lateral collateral ligament (L.C.L.).

Position and function of Anterior cruciate ligament (A.C.L.)

The anterior cruciate ligament is found in the center of the knee and connects the femur and tibia. This ligament runs obliquely connecting the front part of the tibia bone to the back part of the femur bone.

Following are the functions of the anterior cruciate ligament:-

  • This ligament controls the back and forth movement of the knee.
  • Helps to stabilize the knee joint.
  • The tibia prevents the bone from moving forward in front of the femur bone.
  • Connects the tibia bone to the femur.

 Position and functions of the posterior cruciate ligament (P.C.L.)

The posterior cruciate ligament is found at the back of the knee joint and connects the femur and tibia bones. This ligament is larger and stronger than the anterior cruciate ligament. This ligament runs obliquely connecting the posterior part of the tibia bone to the front part of the femur bone.

Following are the functions of the posterior cruciate ligament:-

  • The posterior cruciate ligament controls the forward and backward movements of the knee.
  • The tibia prevents the bone from moving back.
  • Keeps the knee joint stable.
  • Connects the tibia bone to the femur.

Position and function of the Medial collateral ligament (M.C.L.)

The medial collateral ligament is located on the inside of the knee on the side of the knee. Connects the femur bone to the tibia bone.

Following are the functions of the medial collateral ligament:-

  • The medial collateral ligament protects the knee joint from any trauma to the side of the foot.
  • Provides internal stability to the knee.
  • Connects the femur bone to the tibia bone.

Position and function of Lateral Collateral Ligament (L.C.L.)

The lateral collateral ligament connects the outer part of the femur bone to the outer part of the fibula bone and provides stability to the knee.

Following are the functions of the lateral collateral ligament:-

  • Provides stability to the knee.
  • The femur connects the bone to the fibula bone.
